This month, Kilgoris, Kenya joined Kade and Adeiso, Ghana as one of the first African communities to welcome e-readers into their classrooms. Together with The Kilgoris Project, Worldreader successfully launched another program, this time in the Trans Mara, with the enthusiastic support of the local people. Maasai warriors in brightly colored robes held up e-readers and pledged not only to protect the devices, but also to encourage a love of learning and reading among the younger generation.
Just as we´ve seen with our inaugural iRead pilot in the Eastern Region of Ghana, students picked up this new technology in no time. Some students stayed in school up to two hours after it had finished– to read more. And one group of boys finished a book, looked at each other and exclaimed: «Yeah! Let´s pick another one!»
Shadrack, the school´s principal put it brilliantly:
«If you want to plan for a year, you plant rice. If you want to plan for 10 years, plant trees, and if you want to plan for 100 years- you educate.»
