The Sahel region of West Africa has experienced three major food crises in just seven years.
Many families did not have time to recover from one crisis before the next one hit. Drought, poor harvests and high food prices all played a part.
Droughts in 2005 and 2010 were felt most in Niger and parts of Chad, but the food crisis in 2012 affected the entire region, including Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, parts of Chad, Senegal, Gambia, Cameroon and Nigeria.
