The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances has been visiting Chile from 13 to 21 August 2012. During the mission, the UN experts have been examined the main initiatives and policies undertaken by Chile on issues related to enforced or involuntary disappearances in the context of the human rights violations in the past.

The experts have been also analysing the development of investigations and judicial proceedings related to cases of enforced disappearances, as well as issues related to truth, justice and reparation for the victims of enforced disappearances.

The Working Group has been visiting memorial sites and meet with State officials, representatives of civil society organizations and academics as well as relatives of disappeared persons and representatives of UN agencies.

The mission has been being conducted by two members of the Working Group, Ms. Jasminka Dzumhur and Mr. Ariel Dulitzky, who has been accompanied by members of the Secretariat of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

At the end of the visit, today 21 August 2012, the Working Group will hold a press conference at the Patio 29 of the General Cemetery of Santiago, at 15h00. A final report on the mission will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in 2013.

El Grupo de Trabajo de las Naciones Unidas sobre las Desapariciones Forzadas o Involuntarias* ha visitado Chile del 13 al 21 de agosto de 2012. Durante la misión, los expertos de la ONU han examinado las principales iniciativas y políticas emprendidas por el Estado chileno sobre cuestiones relativas a las desapariciones forzadas o involuntarias de personas en el contexto de las violaciones a los derechos humanos del pasado. 

Los expertos también han analizado el desarrollo de las investigaciones y causas judiciales que han tenido lugar sobre casos de desapariciones forzadas, así como otros aspectos, incluidos temas relativos a la verdad, la justicia y la reparación para las víctimas de desapariciones forzadas. 

El Grupo de Trabajo ha visitado sitios de memoria y se ha reunido con funcionarios del Estado, representantes de organizaciones de la sociedad civil y académicos, así como con familiares de desaparecidos y representantes de las agencias de la ONU.

La misión ha estado a cargo de dos miembros del Grupo de Trabajo, la Sra. Jasminka Dzumhur y el Sr. Ariel Dulitzky, quienes estarán acompañados por miembros de la Secretaría de la Oficina del Alto Comisionado para los Derechos Humanos.

Al final de la visita, hoy día 21 de agosto, el Grupo de Trabajo llevará a cabo una conferencia de prensa en el Patio 29 del Cementerio General de Santiago a las 15h00.  
Un informe final sobre la visita será presentado al Consejo de Derechos Humanos en 2013.
