A note on poverty and inequality
Poverty is a multidimensional issue with global reach, and can be overcome through awareness raising as well as social participation and action. By 2030, approximately 3 million people, the equivalent of 40% of the world population, will not have access to adequate housing, health services, or infrastructure. In Latin America today, 25% of the population, or over 113 million people, live in informal settlements in urban areas.
The deadline for the Millennium Development goals is rapidly approaching, giving way to a new development agenda defined by the SDG – Sustainable Development Goals. The #1 SDG goal is to end poverty everywhere, in all its forms. Starting by eradicating extreme poverty (defined by people living on less than $1.25 a day) and by reducing at least by half the proportion of people living in poverty in all its dimensions.
For the first time in history, this goal is within reach. It requires the collective effort of influencers, decision makers and world leaders.
