Half a million readers on mobile phones: Introducing Worldreader Mobile

814

We’ve heard there are more cell phones than toothbrushes on the planet.  We’re not sure who is doing the counting, but one thing is for sure: cell phone use is growing faster in the developing world than anywhere else– and we’ve seen this with our own eyes.

We looked at the data and thought: this is a whole new opportunity for getting more books into people’s hands.  For over a year now, we’ve been testing a book app (called Worldreader Mobile) for simple low-end phones with our partner biNu and we’re thrilled to share with you that we have a half a million people in the developing world reading over 17,000 books per month! Worldreader Mobile is currently present on 4 million mobile phones in countries such as India, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Readers are also sharing e-books with others and are using it to teach children how to read.

You’ll love what the press has to say about it…check out recent coverage in ForbesCNN,Mashable, and Christian Science Monitor.

Together with our e-reader projects, Worldreader Mobile is another platform to provide e-books to people in places where books are scarce.  Please see our latest Kindle launch in one of Africa’s largest slums—at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy in Kenya.  The magic keeps happening– and this is thanks to your support!

Books for all!
