If you’ve been following our progress, you know that we like to try big things– like put a library of books into every kid’s hands in the deleloping world. We’ve just passed 100,000 e-books distributed to kids in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda in 18 months. So now it’s time for a bigger goal… and we’re going to need your help.
Today we’re challenging ourselves to raise the money to send 1 million e-books to Africa’s children in 2012, so that we don’t have another generation of kids growing up without books. We’ve done the math: for $5 per e-book we can do something that’s never been done before. We think that’s pretty compelling.
And so do our friends at FC Barcelona. Kids everywhere, from the Americas to Europe to Africa to Asia, love soccer. Give them a ball, a plastic bottle, or some crumpled paper and within a few seconds, they’re practicing their footwork alone or with friends. Wouldn’t it be great if reading were as popular as soccer? We think so, and so FC Barcelona is going to help us achieve our goal. They’ve given us images of their players to use on our Kindles to inspire kids to read more– have a look at this video to see the kids’ reactions when their favorite players show up on their e-reader screens, encouraging them to read more. It’s wonderful to watch.
